Radiation Protection Division
The Radiation Protection Division ensures that patients, workers, the general public and the environment are protected against the dangers associated with radiation that is harmful to health.
The Radiation Protection Division assesses and manages health risks connected with the use of ionising and non-ionising radiation. The Division grants licences for and regularly inspects the equipment producing ionising radiation that is used in medicine, industry, research and education. It measures radioactivity in the environment, implements the Radon and Radium (in German) Action Plans, and participates in the preparations for radiological emergency situations. Since 2019, the FOPH and the cantons have been implementing the Federal Act on Protection against the Risks associated with Non-Ionising Radiation and with Sound (NIRSA) (in German).

Radiation, radioactivity & sound
Radiation is everywhere: everyone comes across the subject sooner or later, whether as a citizen, consumer, patient or at work. In many cases we profit from radiation, one only has to think about diagnostic x-rays in medicine. But we occasionally need to be careful – where radon or UV radiation are concerned, for example.
