Switzerland–France: close cooperation facing common challenges
The head of the FDFA, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, received the French minister for Europe and foreign affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, in Geneva for an exchange of views on cross-border issues, G7 and the major challenges facing Europe. In a geopolitical context marked by the war in Ukraine, tensions in the Middle East and shifts in transatlantic relations, Switzerland and France underscored their desire to work together for a more stable, secure and competitive Europe, and for effective multilateralism anchored in Geneva.

Switzerland–France: close cooperation facing common challenges
The head of the FDFA, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, received the French minister for Europe and foreign affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, in Geneva for an exchange of views on cross-border issues, G7 and the major challenges facing Europe. In a geopolitical context marked by the war in Ukraine, tensions in the Middle East and shifts in transatlantic relations, Switzerland and France underscored their desire to work together for a more stable, secure and competitive Europe, and for effective multilateralism anchored in Geneva.

Financial difficulties also affect the middle income group
In Switzerland, 55.2% of the population belongs to the middle income group, a share that has remained largely stable for 25 years. The life situations of people in this group can vary considerably. In the lower middle income group, around one in ten people face housing costs exceeding 40% of their disposable household income. One in four people in this group live in a household without the means to cover an unexpected expense of CHF 2500. In the upper middle income group the respective proportions are much lower, at 3.5% and 10.9%. These are some of the findings from the 2023 Household Budget Survey and the 2024 Survey on Income and Living Conditions (SILC) conducted by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
Cooling without pumps: New measurement data for modular reactors
Passive cooling systems for nuclear power plants operate without pumps or electricity: They rely solely on physical effects such as density differences to dissipate heat. Researchers at the Paul Scherrer Institute PSI have now experimentally investigated such systems for small modular reactors, collecting high-resolution measurement data for the first time. This provides an important basis for developing future generations of reactors.

The Swiss OSCE Chairmanship today opened a high-level conference in Geneva on the theme “Anticipating technologies – for a safe and humane future”. Patient with a hantavirus infection being treated in hospital
One person with a hantavirus infection is currently being treated at the University Hospital Zurich (USZ). The patient is male and returned to Switzerland after travelling on the cruise ship on which there were a number of hantavirus cases. The USZ is prepared to deal with such cases, is able to care for the patient, and guarantee the safety of staff and all patients. There is currently no danger to the Swiss public.
International survey on primary care: most Swiss doctors are satisfied with their jobs
Primary care doctors rate the overall performance of the Swiss health system as good or very good. Almost eight in ten doctors are quite to very satisfied with their jobs, although half report feeling very or extremely stressed. These are the findings of an international survey conducted in ten countries under the aegis of the Commonwealth Fund.
Switzerland and EU sign agreement on Swiss participation in EU programmes
Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin and EU Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva signed the Switzerland-EU programmes agreement in Bern on 10 November 2025. This part of the Switzerland-EU package can be provisionally applied with retroactive effect from the beginning of 2025. Switzerland is thus associated to Horizon Europe, the Euratom programme and the Digital Europe programme. The agreement also paves the way for association to ITER, Erasmus+ and EU4Health.
Federal Councillor Baume-Schneider hosts meeting of German-speaking social and health affairs ministers in Brienz
On 6 and 7 October 2025, Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider welcomed her German-speaking counterparts to Brienz in the Bernese Oberland for a ministerial meeting. The discussions among the social and health affairs ministers focused on the key topics of retirement age, child and adolescent mental health, and the future of basic medical care. In a joint declaration the five countries reaffirmed their willingness to address these challenges together and to further intensify their collaboration.
Federal Councillor Baume-Schneider attends the meeting of EU health ministers in Copenhagen
On 15 and 16 September 2025, Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider attended the informal meeting of EU health ministers held in Copenhagen. The main topics discussed were preparedness, security of supply, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and the life sciences sector. The Head of the Federal Department of Home Affairs also took this opportunity to hold bilateral meetings with several of her counterparts.
Federal Council approves the amendments to the International Health Regulations
At its meeting on 20 June 2025, the Federal Council decided to approve the amendments to the International Health Regulations (IHR 2005). In reaching this decision, it took account of the results of the public consultation and of the consultation of the parliamentary committees responsible, taking note of the relevant report. The IHR are designed to promote international collaboration to control any events which pose a threat to public health.

Use of multigene-expression tests for breast cancer
Multigene-expression tests for patients with breast cancer are designed to help decide whether to proceed with chemotherapy following breast cancer surgery. This HTA report assessed the compulsory reimbursement of the multigene expression tests OncotypeDX, MammaPrint, EndoPredict and Prosigna for breast cancer. The HTA report reviewed the clinical efficacy, cost-effectiveness and budget impact, as well as the ethical, legal, social and organisational aspects.

Consumer prices increased by 0.3% in April
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 0.3% in April 2026 compared with the previous month, reaching 101.1 points (December 2025 = 100). Inflation was +0.6% compared with the same month of the previous year. These are the results of the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
Residential property prices increased by 1.5% in 1st quarter 202
In the 1st quarter 2026, the Swiss Residential Property Price Index (IMPI) increased by 1.5% compared with the previous quarter to stand at 126.8 points (4th quarter 2019 = 100). Across Switzerland, single-family house prices rose (+1.1%) as did condominium prices (+1.8%). The biggest rise in residential property prices was observed in urban municipalities of a large agglomeration (+3.1%), while price stability was recorded in urban municipalities of a small or outside agglomeration. Compared with the same quarter of the previous year, total inflation stood at +4.7%. These are some of the results from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
Health care costs up 4.1% in 2024
In 2024, health care costs amounted to CHF 97 billion, 4% more than the year before. Almost two-thirds of health care funding came from households’ own pockets and health insurance premiums. According to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), the partial data available suggest that costs will rise by more than 3% in 2025.

State Secretary Alexandre Fasel and US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau held political consultations in Washington, DC, on 6 May 2026. Discussions focused on the current geopolitical situation, economic cooperation, innovation and future-oriented issues. The open and constructive exchange underscored the close bilateral relations between Switzerland and the US.
Federal Council continues support for the Swiss Human Rights Institution
The Federal Council today decided to submit to the Federal Assembly a spending ceiling of CHF 3.93 million for the Swiss Human Rights Institution (SHRI) for the period 2027–30, thus maintaining the same level of funding as in the previous period.
President Parmelin meets with President Mattarella and Deputy Prime Minister Tajani in Rome
On Tuesday, 5 May, President Guy Parmelin met with Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani in Rome. The talks focused on bilateral relations, security issues and competitiveness in Europe, as well as current international affairs. The response to the devastating fire in Crans Montana was also discussed. On 6 May, President Parmelin will attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new Swiss Guards at the Vatican. During his visit, he will meet Pope Leo XIV and Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin.
