National health policy
Duties and responsibilities for Swiss healthcare are divided among the federal, cantonal and municipal authorities. A national health policy enables the various players to coordinate their efforts in select areas of healthcare and at the same time draw on the wealth of ideas and innovative potential inherent in the federal system. Find out here about the current areas of policy.

Health policy strategies
Health2030, the Quality Strategy, and national health strategies in areas such as dementia, communicable diseases and healthcare associated infections are supporting the future development of Switzerland’s health system.
National programmes
The goals of the DigiSanté, NIP and NAPS programmes are wide-ranging: digital transformation of healthcare, stopping the transmission of HIV and hepatitis B and C, and protecting the public against vaccine-preventable diseases.
Political action plans
Action plans developed by the federal government and cantons to reduce health risks and hazards are implemented by the FOPH, e.g. in the areas of organ donation, radioactivity, suicide prevention and synthetic nanomaterials.
Political mandates
Communicable diseases, mental disorders, and smoking, alcohol and drug use give rise to high costs. The FOPH therefore acts on behalf of the federal government and cantons to reduce their impact on the health system.
Stakeholder platforms
On behalf of the federal government and cantons, the FOPH supports the development and implementation of activities on stakeholder platforms. These provide a forum for intensifying collaboration among various partners.
Health care topics
Switzerland has a high-quality health system. To ensure that this can be maintained in spite of rising costs, the FOPH addresses healthcare topics such as assuring basic care, health equity and health literacy.
