As befits a federal republic, the roles and responsibilities within the Swiss healthcare system are split up among the federal, cantonal and municipal levels. The key terms of reference in relation to healthcare are set down in the federal constitution. The FOPH is responsible for more than 20 laws and numerous ordinances based on these provisions. Health professions legislation

The FOPH regulates the various healthcare professions to assure a high quality of training and vocational education and ensure that the Swiss healthcare system has an adequate pool of qualified professionals to draw on. Legislation regarding evaluation & research

The knowledge the FOPH needs to fulfil its assigned tasks is acquired on the basis of the Federal Act on the Promotion of Research and Innovation (RIPA) and specialist legislation.

Legislation regarding insurances

The core tasks of the FOPH include the ongoing development of the social health and accident insurance systems and the military insurance scheme. Here you’ll find the entire legislative framework, including the Federal Health Insurance Act (KVG/LAMal), the Federal Accident Insurance Act (UVG/LAA), the Federal Military Insurance Act (MVG/LAM) and the accompanying ordinances at all levels of enactment.
