Switzerland has concluded international social security agreements with 44 countries to date. Switzerland has also ratified a number of standard-setting conventions developed by international organisations working in the social field.
The main aims of these agreements are to ensure equal treatment of citizens of the contracting parties, to determine the applicable legislation, and to regulate the payment of social security benefits abroad. The international agreements fall into two categories – those between Switzerland and several countries, and those between Switzerland and a single country.
