Estimates on cost and mortality of HAIs

A study based on the 2017 point prevalence survey conducted in hospitals provides a new estimate of the costs and mortality that can be attributed to HAIs. These figures had not been reviewed since 2014.

Almost 60,000 affected patients per year

According to the study, 59,091 patients would have suffered a healthcare-associated infection in 2017 and 5,909 would have died as a result of them. The average hospital stay of HAI patients was extended by an estimated 6.4 days. The study estimates the costs to the healthcare system at 751 million CHF, or 12,709 CHF per HAI case. With these figures, the study provides an important foundation for evaluating the NOSO Strategy’s activities in future.
