Metastudy on preventable infections

Again and again when it comes to healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), the question arises as to what proportion could be avoided by means of appropriate measures in hospitals.

A literature-based metastudy conducted in 2017 under Swissnoso’s lead evaluated numerous international before-and-after studies of this issue. For example, more than 16 studies on the success of preventive measures relating to the use of urinary catheters were analysed. The result: regardless of the type of preventive measure, 35 to 68 per cent of infections can be prevented. These data will facilitate even more targeted measures to prevent HAIs and enable their actual efficacy to be evaluated.
