Coronavirus: COVID certificate

The COVID certificate will provide documentary evidence that you have had a COVID-19 vaccination, have had the disease, or have tested negative. It is currently under development, and is likely to be available from summer 2021.

What is the COVID certificate?

The COVID certificate will be a way of documenting that you have been vaccinated for COVID-19, have had the disease, or have a negative test result. You will be provided with the COVID certificate on paper with a QR code. You will receive separate PDFs, each with a separate QR code, for the vaccination, for the disease and for the test result.
You can also scan your personal QR codes and save them in an app on your mobile phone. When asked to show your Covid certificate you can present either the printout or the electronic version of the QR code in the app. When your personal COVID certificate is checked you will also have to show your passport or ID.

The precise way the COVID certificate will be used is under discussion. For example it could be used for travel.

Where and how will I be able to get a COVID certificate?

The certificate is currently under development, and is likely to be available from summer 2021.

You will probably be able to get your certificate from the following places:

  • Vaccination centres
  • Medical practices
  • Hospitals
  • Pharmacies
  • Test centres

As soon as the COVID certificate is available you will find more information on how to proceed on this website.

EU certificate

The EU is currently also developing a certificate, the Digital Green Certificate. Switzerland’s COVID certificate will be implemented to be compatible with the EU’s Digital Green Certificate.

According to the EU, the Digital Green Certificate will facilitate the free movement of persons within the EU and Schengen states. Individual states will decide how the certificate is used.

Data security

Neither personal data nor the certificates will be stored in a central system. If you lose your COVID certificate you will have to request another one from the place where you were vaccinated or tested and that issued it.
