Radiological protection training for radiation oncologists / radiotherapists

Radio-Onkologen benötigen eine spezielle Ausbildung im Strahlenschutz. Die genauen Anforderungen zum Erhalt der Sachkunde im Strahlenschutz im Bereich der Radio-Onkologie finden Sie hier.

Training is based on the Ordinance of 15 September 1998 on Training and Permitted Activities in Radiological Protection (Radiological Protection Training Ordinance).

In the training programme leading to a Swiss radiation oncology specialist title, the content relevant to radiological protection is defined as follows:

  1. Radiophysics
  2. Structure of matter, types of radiation, radiation absorption, radiation-matter interaction, direct and indirect action of ionizing radiation, radiation measurement
  3. Radiological protection
    • Basic principles of radiological protection
    • Legal foundations and implementing regulations
    • Dosimetry (concepts including dose area product, dependence of dose on physical and other factors, dose limits)
    • Risks and optimization in the application of ionizing radiation
    • Medical-technical radiological protection (general, structural, equipment-related and personal protective measures)
    • Risks of radiation accidents (prevention, diagnosis and treatment)
  4. Radiobiology
  5. Radiation effects in biological systems, cell survival curves, dose-effect curves, repair mechanisms, radiosensitivity, radiosensitizers and radioprotectors, radiation reactions, radiation risk

This content is covered in the course of specialist training and included in specialist examinations. It is defined in detail in the curriculum of the specialist training programme. At present, the attendance to a specific radiation protection course provided by the cantonal hospital Aarau is mandatory. The course takes place every two years, the next course will be given the 18th and 19th of May, 2017.

For further information, please consult the specialist training programme on the FMH website (see the link below).
