Medical radiation technologists (MTRA HF)

The Swiss federal diploma in medical radiation technology (professional college / HF) provides evidence of the necessary qualifications. Further information can be found here.

Holders of this diploma are entitled to carry out the following tasks:

  • Independent operation of medical diagnostic X-ray systems as instructed by a duly qualified physician.
  • In diagnostic radiology, MTRAs are considered to be radiological protection experts - under Article 18 Paragraph 1 RPO - in areas not connected with medical decisions: performance of constancy tests and quality assurance.
  • Operation of therapeutic X-ray systems, medical cyclotrons and irradiators under the direction of a duly qualified physician or medical physicist.
  • Handling of unsealed radioactive sources in areas of Type B and C under the direction of a radioprotection expert.

In order to become radioprotection expert for activities involving unsealed radioactive sources in working areas of Type B and C under the direction of a nuclear medicine specialist authorized to use unsealed radioactive sources in humans, diploma holders are additionally required to attend an FOPH-approved course to obtain B/C laboratory expertise. At the Haute Ecole de Santé Vaud (HESAV), this course has been integrated into MTRA training since 2002; the diploma thus provides evidence of the necessary expertise.

Foreign MTRA diploma

Foreign MTRA diploma are subject to recognition by the Swiss Red Cross. Moreover for the designation of radioprotection expert in the field of unsealed radioactive sources (Nuclear medicine) a two week training in an authorized course needs to be taken.
