Health professions legislation

The FOPH regulates the various healthcare professions to assure a high quality of training and vocational education and ensure that the Swiss healthcare system has an adequate pool of qualified professionals to draw on. Find out here about the Medical Professions Act (MedBG/LPMéd), the Psychology Professions Act (PsyG/LPsy), the Healthcare Occupations Act (HOA) and the accompanying ordinances and regulations.

By implementing and further developing legal provisions that are already in place as well as introducing new provisions, the FOPH is primarily committed to ensuring a high quality of training and continuing professional development (CPD) within the health professionals. Through quality assurance measures such as accreditation of study and CPD programmes as well as federal exams, the achievement of legally defined objectives is verified. The FOPH also ensures that the same prerequisites apply throughout Switzerland for autonomous professional private-sector activity. For that purpose, it uses internet-based registers which list the persons with Swiss or Switzerland-recognised diplomas and CPD titles.
