SwissCovid App: creating covidcodes faster

23.11.2020 – Persons who have tested positive can enter their covidcode into the SwissCovid app to warn others. Previously, only cantonal medical services as well as the attending doctor were able to generate covidcodes. Now, other actors in the healthcare sector can do so, too.

In its 18 November 2020 meeting, the Federal Council has approved amendments to the Ordinance on the Proximity Tracing System. They form the basis for a fully automated process around the issuing of covidcodes. Data protection continues to be guaranteed.

Goal of the amendments to the ordinance

The amendments of the Ordinance provide relief to the cantonal medical officers by authorising other actors in the healthcare sector to generate covidcodes, such as the infoline, testing centres and pharmacies. They also allow for the automated generation of covidcodes.

These measures accelerate the processes around the issuing of covidcodes and shorten the time span between a positive test result and the warning of other app users.

SwissCovid App supports contact tracing

When a person who has tested positive self-isolates and when someone who has been in contact with an infected person goes into quarantine, the transmission chain is broken. This happens in the framework of the so-called contact tracing.

The SwissCovid app supports contact tracing: persons who have tested positive can enter their covidcode into the app and thus warn others about possible exposure while remaining anonymous. The amendments to the ordinance allow for these warnings to be issued earlier.
