Solar Eclipse on 12 August 2026

On 12 August 2026, a partial solar eclipse will be visible in Switzerland. Are you ready to view it safely? Read here to learn how to properly protect your eyes.

On August 12, 2026, many eyes will be turned toward the sky: a solar eclipse will also be visible in Switzerland. The Moon will pass between the Earth and the Sun, partially obscuring it. The event will begin around 7:00 p.m. and end around 9:00 p.m. The solar eclipse will reach its peak approximately between 8:15 p.m. and 8:20 p.m., when the Moon will almost completely cover the Sun. The phenomenon will be particularly visible from high points with an open view.

Protect your eyes

Looking directly at the Sun, even if it is partially hidden, can damage the retina. Therefore, protect your eyes by wearing protective glasses specifically designed for solar viewing.

Please note the following points:

  • Protective glasses must be certified to ISO 12312-2:2015 and have the CE mark.
  • The glasses must not be worn out or damaged.
  • Avoid making your own glasses or using colored films or lenses, as these do not provide reliable eye protection.
  • Do not wear ordinary sunglasses. They are not sufficient for observing a solar eclipse: they let in too much light and put your eyes at risk.
  • Directly observing the sun through binoculars, telescopes, or cameras is also dangerous, as these instruments further concentrate the sun’s rays. It is essential to always install filters or protective films in front of the device’s lenses.
  • Pay special attention to children to ensure they wear protective glasses during observation that are sized appropriately for them and fit their face properly, so they do not slip.
