Research in communicable diseases

Why are case numbers rising for certain diseases? Why do some population groups fall ill more frequently or more seriously than others? Are the new vaccination recommendations being implemented? How is the ratio of resistant bacteria developing? The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) is conducting research into communicable diseases relevant to public health to be able to answer these and similar questions based on scientific evidence.

Research contributes to the development of strategies and recommendations to prevent and control communicable diseases. The key areas are regularly reviewed and redefined if necessary. The following topics are currently in focus:

  • Antibiotic resistance and healthcare-associated infections
  • Vaccinations
  • Reference laboratories
  • Development of monitoring, prevention and control of respiratory viruses, and the
  • Partnership between public health sciences and administration.

National Immunisation Programme

The Confederation, together with the cantons and other stakeholders, has drawn up a National Immunisation Programme (NIP) with the aim of guaranteeing that the population is sufficiently protected from vaccine-preventable diseases.

National programme (NAPS): Stop HIV, hepatitis B and C viruses and sexually transmitted infections

The idea is that by 2030, there should be no more transmissions of HIV, hepatitis B and C in Switzerland. There is also to be a reduction in the number of other sexually transmitted infections. Information on the new NAPS programme can be found here.
