Overview of authorised pilot trials with cannabis
Several pilot trials are currently underway with cannabis for non-medical purposes. The following overview provides information on the most important key data.
In Switzerland, pilot trials with cannabis are planned in all major cities. The various organisers are planning to distribute cannabis in pharmacies, cannabis social clubs and non-profit stores as well as via other distribution channels. The pilot trials will thus allow for, among other things, a compari-son of the different distribution systems and show which regulatory models are accepted by consumers and the population.
Timeline for the pilot trial
Those responsible for the pilot trials are required to inform the FOPH annually about their progress. The FOPH will provide information to the public based on this feedback (Pilot trials with cannabis (admin.ch)).

CanLeg – Canton of St.Gallen
The pilot study examines the demand for and consumption of legally purchased cannabis, as well as the impact of distribution channels on recreational cannabis use. It is a randomised controlled trial (RCT).
Cann-L – City of Lausanne
Project Cann-L is intended to assess the feasibility and the potential impact of a model for regulating the consumption of cannabis through its sale on a non-profit basis in the city of Lausanne.
La Cannabinothèque
The study to be carried out in Vernier (GE) will investigate to what extent a regulated cannabis access programme can improve knowledge of cannabis use and associated problems, and reduce the health and social risks involved.
Cannabis Research Zürich
The aim of the pilot trial in the canton of Zurich is to investigate the social and economic consequences of legalising recreational cannabis use in Switzerland.
Grashaus Projects
Can the structured, controlled sale of cannabis (with points of sale in Liestal and Allschwil) bring about a change in consumption?
SCRIPT
The main aim of this pilot trial in Berne, Bienne and Lucerne is to evaluate what impact a regulated not-for-profit sale of cannabis in pharmacies combined with related advisory services may have on cannabis consumption.
WeedCare
This study on the regulated sale of cannabis in pharmacies in Canton Basel-Stadt is examining the effects in public health terms of permitting regulated cannabis sales.
ZüriCan
This study will investigate how regulated sales, including the provision of advice, can enhance knowledge of lower-risk types of cannabis use and promote such behaviour.
