Before they can be put on the market, medicinal products have to be tested for quality, safety and effectiveness. For this reason most medicinal products go through the marketing authorisation process and are put into various supply categories by Swissmedic, Swiss Institute of Therapeutic Products:
A: Supply once with a prescription from a doctor or veterinarian
B: Supply with a prescription from a doctor or veterinarian
C: Supply on technical advice from medical staff
D: Supply on technical advice
E: Supply without technical advice
The supply category specifies who is allowed to supply which medicinal products. Therefore, it has direct economic effects for manufacturers and vendors. The categorisation of medicinal products and their supply are a main focus of political interest.
Proposals are currently being worked out on how to reorganise the access of the population to medicinal products in the sense of the policy. Main considerations are the classification of medicinal products, collaboration between various types of technical personnel in the supply of medicinal products, and incentives in prescription and supply.
